Loch Tay Loop
When you live in Scotland and the sun shines you get twitchy: you might not see it again for a while so you feel like you should make the most of it. I'd love to live somewhere with predictable weather again. Yesterday John and I went to beautiful Killin to start our loop of Loch Tay via Glen Lyon - the weather was perfect and the leaves have started to change. It's most definitely knee warmer, glove and overshoe weather - extremities are starting to be nipped.
we headed north, by the loch side and pretty soon took a left and up Ben Lawers - my knee's didn't appreciate the steep incline and I suffered up through the forest. Suddenly we came out the tree line and were given an amazing view south down loch Tay - sun blazing (see above). Struggling to the top (John wasn't struggling) we reached the grand reservoir and the weather system completely changed with strong winds and light rain. It quickly got back to being fine and there were rainbows all around.
We headed up to Kenmore on fairly easy roads, tree lined and warnings of red squirrels on the loose. After a plate of carbs (grey squirrel and chips) we got back on the bikes and took the south B-road back to Killin. I was aware how the sun is far from it's summer height and how my legs were far from being particularly useful. The terrain, despite the incredible views, dips in and out of it's elevated state, meaning hard work on the legs. Everytime I attacked a hill I would be humbled after, well - I'd like to say thirty seconds. Tough stuff. Back to the car park and the long road home. Amazing autumn action.
